Judge Rules No Derivative Sovereign Immunity for Maker of Texas Lotto Tickets
AUSTIN--On Thursday, a judge ruled that G-Tech, one of the makers of Texas lottery tickets, does not have derivative sovereign immunity.
More than 1,100 Texas lottery players are suing G-Tech claiming they have been cheated of their deserved winnings. After scratching the "Fun 5's" lottery ticket, players claim they're owed thousands of dollars in winnings and are suing G-Tech, the printer of the ticket, for more than $500 million.
The plaintiffs already tried suing the Texas Lottery Commission, but because it's a state agency, it can't be sued. A hearing last Thursday was to determine whether that same sovereign immunity applies to G-Tech.
