Area Police Departments Launch Weekend Safety Initiatives
The Fourth of July weekend is one of the deadliest holiday weekends for drivers, so in an effort to make streets safer, police departments are enforcing an Arrive Alive Central Texas initiative.
More than 20 law enforcement agencies, including the Austin and Cedar Park police departments, are enforcing a no-refusal initiative. It started at 9 a.m. Friday and runs until 5 a.m. Sunday.
The no-refusal initiative allows police to conduct blood search warrants on suspected drunken drivers who refuse to give a breath or blood test.
"This Fourth of July weekend, we want the light show that you see to be the fireworks around you, not the flashing lights behind you, so take due caution,” Cedar Park Police Chief Sean Mannix said,
During last year's Fourth of July no-refusal and Arrive Alive weekend, 72 people were arrested for drunken driving. Police also responded to 82 crashes in Austin, with two serious injuries and one death.
