Katko has first challenger for 24th Congressional District

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Congressman John Katko has a challenger for the 24th Congressional District. Tuesday, community leader Anne Messenger announced she is running for Congress. She is the first Democrat to announce a challenge.

Messenger has served on the board of many organizations, and most recently had her own business in career management and human resources. She closed her business and is now working as an independent consultant. Messenger says health care and education are important to her and wants to see the region thrive.

"As I thought about it and I looked around here in Central New York and I looked at what is going on in Congress, I'm thinking, 'wait a minute, we could be way better represented.' I'm going to do this," Messenger said.

The election is more than a year away. The 24th Congressional District includes Wayne, Cayuga and Onondaga counties and parts of Oswego County.
