Albany Archives: A trip on the Erie Canal through Cohoes
The iconic Erie Canal celebrates its bicentennial this year, as ground was broken on “Clinton’s Big Ditch” on July 4th, 1817. After being completed in 1825 it was one of the greatest engineering marvels of its time. Spanning from Albany all the way to Buffalo, the canal became an extremely efficient way to travel, except when one was trying to get through Cohoes.
