Saratoga non-profit gives retired horses renewed purpose helping vets

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- The end of a horse's career on the track doesn't mean that horse's impact in Saratoga is over.

The non-profit "Saratoga Warhorse" takes retired thoroughbreds and pairs them with veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

The experience helps the vets cope with some the symptoms that come with PTSD.

Sunday, they were at the race course's community booth, spreading awareness about what they do.

Their representative, a veteran who rehabbed through the program, now volunteers with War Horse.

“I think through certain counseling it doesn’t always work, but somehow there’s that connection with the animal that breaks that barrier down and makes them understand how to work through the process with post-traumatic stress disorder,” said Nicolle Bibeau, a Saratoga WarHorse volunteer.

The program is offered for free to veterans.
