People Will Soon Have to Be at Least 21 Years Old to Buy Tobacco Products in Albany County

Very soon, people will have to be at least 21 years old to buy tobacco products in Albany County.

Albany County Executive Dan McCoy has signed the law, which was approved by the Albany County legislature last month.

With McCoy's approval, Albany County joins Suffolk and Chautaqua Counties, as well as New York City, as the only places in the state to raise the legal tobacco use age to 21.

Data from the "Centers for Disease Control and Prevention" show that in areas where the minimum age is 21, there has been a decrease in youth smoking.

Opponents have said it will have no impact, and simply hurts business.

Included in this law are cigarettes, other tobacco products, as well as e-cigarettes.

The law takes effect immediately after it is filed with the secretary of state.
