Preventing Child Marriage

Underage girls are still being forced into arranged marriages in the US, even in 2017. In New York, a 14 year old can get married with parental consent and the approval of a judge, and a 16 year old only needs parental approval. Advocates say some parents are abusing the system to push girls into marriages which are almost impossible for them to legally get out of, since a minor can't sue for divorce without the help of an adult. Those advocates are calling for a ban on marriage for anyone under 17 years old. Assemblywoman Amy Paulin, President of the national Organization for Women's New York City Chapter Sonia Ossorio, and Executive Director of Unchained at Last Fraidy Reiss discuss.
