Psychiatric Center's Future in Question
This year's budget negotiations could include the final battle in a years-long fight over the fate of a children's psychiatric facility. The Western New York Children's Psychiatric Center and the Buffalo Psychiatric Center are slated to consolidate, with the patients from the children's center moving to the adult facility. Local lawmakers and patient advocates argue that kids remain in a separate location to ensure the best possible treatment. They've been able to delay the consolidation for the past two years. Senator Robert Ortt and the coordinator of the coalition to save the center, Dave Chudy, discuss the issue.
