State Senate's Joint Task Force Hosts Forum on Heroin and Opioid Addiction

PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- It's a drug problem that affects people of all ages and economic backgrounds: heroin addiction.

The issue was addressed by the State Senate's Joint Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction Wednesday night. The forum at St. John Fisher College featured people affected by heroin abuse and experts speaking on the issue.

Their hope was to gather information to craft helpful legislation moving forward.

"This is an epidemic in our community and communities across the state -- heroin deaths. We had 65 in 2014, which was double what the number was the year before that and double what the number was the year before that. So, clearly there's something going on here. It's an epidemic. We want to get our arms around it. Try to figure out what we can do about it," said State Senator Rich Funke, a Republican from Fairport.

The meeting was one of four forums held across the state this spring.
