Incumbent Deemie wins Johnson City GOP mayoral primary

Johnson City's Republican mayor will move on to fight again.

Incumbent Greg Deemie won a close race Tuesday night over two challengers, Richard Balles and Marty Meaney. Deemie finished with 255 votes, with Balles pulling in 237.

All the candidates knew each other well, with the runners-up working as trustees under Deemie's administration. Each candidate had pushed a message of being tough on crime and drugs.

Deemie brought back the community action team and bike patrols to improve safety. Balles outlined a five-point plan that includes a zero tolerance policy on crime and drugs. Meaney said he wanted to explore the idea of merging the Binghamton and Johnson City police departments.

Deemie will now face Democratic candidate Andrew Holbert in the general election.
