Inmate assaults guard in Davidson County jail escape

LEXINGTON, N.C. -- The Davidson County Sheriff's Office continues to search for a man who escaped from the detention center this weekend.

Investigators say 23-year-old Benjamin Small assaulted a corrections officer as he fled the jail.

"Mr. Small had concealed himself in a cell that was not being used. He started striking Detention Officer Powell with a shower head which he had in a men's sock. He struck Detention Officer Powell at least seven or eight times in the head," said Sheriff David Grice, Davidson Co.

The sheriff says Officer Powell is recuperating at home.

Authorities say Small is facing assault, escape and robbery charges in addition to the nine other charges he faced before the escape attempt.

Small is white, stands 5 feet, 1 inch tall and weighs about 135 pounds. He has brown hair, hazel eyes and fair skin with tattoos on his left and right arms.

If you see him, call 911.
