GCS Employees Take Part in Summer of Service

GREENSBORO -- Guilford County Schools employees are using their summer to help others.

They're working to combat hunger in what's been called one of the hungriest regions in the country.

“We try to grow things we can use and have a little shelf life, potatoes, cucumbers, tomatoes, beans," said Jim King, Share the Harvest board chair. "We try to grow things we can get the most yield from, the most benefit.”

Growth that's key to what Share the Harvest of Guilford County is trying to do to help combat food insecurity.

“Share the Harvest is a conduit for community and school gardens for extra produce that we distribute to food pantries and agencies that feed the hungry in town," said King.

King says the organization feeds nearly 2,000 people every week through food donations during peak season. It's a lot of work, but this year they'll have some help from Guilford County Schools employees.

“Working with community gardens and yielding the harvest and transferring those to other organizations that feed the needy or operate a food bank," said Charlos Banks, GCS Student Services and character development executive director.

This summer GCS employees will be working with community and school gardens, as well as other organizations to try and increase food security.

“In the past, we've worked with various community organizations to learn more about the needs they meet," said Banks. "This is the first year our efforts have focused on a true community need, a very growing need in Guilford County."

King says this kind of teamwork could pave the work for groups partnering together to help combat the issue.

“There’s a lot of great grass roots organizations," said King. "But if we can all get in and contribute just a little bit, we can get off this list and solve the problem.”

GCS' Summer of Service runs from June 22 through July 20, but organizers hope to keep helping the community beyond that time frame.
