Eat to Live Food Co-Op opens in Syracuse
Syracuse residents living on the South Side have a new place to shop for fresh food. The Eat to Live Food Co-Op is officially open for business. Our Iris St. Meran spoke with people about the meaningful addition to the neighborhood.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Eat to Live Co-Op was about five years in the making.
"There's just nothing down here as far as healthy food. You have quick stops and that type of thing, but to get the vegetables, [they] look wonderful and it's all right here," said Eleanor Pearlman who attends a nearby church.
As many of the signs here indicate, the food will primarily come from New York farms. But the board president said they will be looking to neighbors for their input about what else to fill the shelves with.
Neighbors who visited the co-op on day one say they've been anxiously awaiting the grand opening and are happy to have something like this nearby.
Jacinta Connelly said, "It's wonderful because the local stores that are here, they don't offer healthy foods for people who eat healthy and the prices are outrageous. So it's very good for the community."
"Actually, we were waiting a while for it to come and me and my parents were getting excited about it. Every morning I would stop by and look at the Co-Op. It's great," said Clinton Welch.
This building doesn't just mean healthy options for neighbors but it will have an impact on the overall makeup of the community.
Eat to Live Board President Shirley Rowser said, "This was an empty lot. It shows economic development. It shows that it can happen. This is the first brand new building in this area in over 30 years. We're just so proud to be a part of that."
They're hoping that this could be the start of even better things for the neighborhood.
The Co-Op is open Monday through Saturday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
