National Hispanic Month

BUFFALO, N.Y. — National Hispanic Month officially kicked off Friday with a formal ceremony in downtown Buffalo.

Local dignitaries read proclamations and spoke about the importance of celebrating Hispanic culture.

There will be more than 25 events over the next four weeks, promoting Hispanic heritage, history, and culture.

"Hispanics make up around 75,000 citizens here in Western New York. Today we kick off a month-long celebration where we can recognize the contributions that Hispanics have made here in Western New York," said Casimiro Rodriguez, chairman, Hispanic Heritage Council of WNY.

The Buffalo Zoo will host Hispanic Heritage Family Day and the Hispanic Veterans Memorial 5K run will set out from Canalside, both on Saturday.
